What is the Panorama test?
The Panorama test is a type of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). This is a screening test in pregnancy that only needs a sample of your blood. It looks at DNA from the placenta (the organ that supports your baby in the womb). This helps it screen for certain chromosomal conditions, which happen when there are changes to the chromosomes that carry a baby’s genetic information.
Panorama is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. This means it can tell you if there is a lower or higher chance of your baby having a condition, but it can’t tell you for certain.
You can have the Panorama test at our Belgravia or Dulwich clinic.
When can you have the Panorama test?
You can have Panorama from 9 weeks of pregnancy. It can be used for pregnancies with one baby or twins.
It may also be suitable if you’re pregnant with one baby using a donor egg, or for a surrogate pregnancy. Panorama isn’t suitable if you’re expecting triplets or more.
If you’re not sure whether Panorama is right for your pregnancy, our team can help before you book.
What does the Panorama test screen for?
What Panorama can screen for depends on your pregnancy and the screening options you choose.
Pregnancies with one baby
Panorama tests can screen for:
- Down syndrome, a genetic condition that can affect learning and physical development
- Edwards syndrome, a serious genetic condition that can affect a baby’s development and health
- Patau syndrome, a serious genetic condition that can affect development and cause significant health problems
- Triploidy, a rare chromosome condition that can seriously affect a baby’s development
- Turner syndrome, a genetic condition that affects females and can influence growth and development
- Sex chromosome conditions, which can affect development in different ways
- Your baby’s sex, if you choose to find out
Optional screening may also be available for microdeletions, which are small missing sections of a chromosome.
These include:
- DiGeorge syndrome, which can affect development and different parts of the body
- 1p36 deletion syndrome, which can affect development and learning
- Angelman syndrome, a genetic condition that affects the nervous system and development
- Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic condition that can affect growth and appetite
- Cri-du-chat syndrome, a genetic condition that can affect development and learning
Twin pregnancies
For twin pregnancies, Panorama can screen for Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome. It can also report the sex of each baby if you’d like to know.
Panorama can tell you if twins are identical or non-identical. For identical twins, extra screening may be available for Turner syndrome, sex chromosome conditions and DiGeorge syndrome.
Egg donor and surrogate pregnancies
For eligible pregnancies with one baby using a donor egg or a surrogate, Panorama can screen for Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome. Your baby’s sex can also be reported if you’d like to know.
How does the Panorama test work?
During pregnancy, your blood contains your own DNA as well as small amounts of DNA from the placenta. Panorama can tell these types of DNA apart. It uses this to check the chance of certain chromosomal conditions.
No sample is taken directly from your baby or the pregnancy.
What happens during your Panorama test?
At your appointment, we’ll take a blood sample from your arm. We then send it to Natera, the lab that runs the Panorama test.
You won’t need any other procedure, and you can get on with your day as normal afterwards.
When will you get your Panorama test results?
At Grosvenor Gardens Healthcare, Panorama results are usually available in under 10 working days.
We’ll explain your result and what it means. Occasionally, the test doesn’t give a result. If this happens, we may talk to you about giving another blood sample or having a different test.
Understanding your Panorama test results
Your result will usually show a lower or higher chance for each condition screened.
A lower chance result means the condition is unlikely, but it doesn’t completely rule it out. A higher chance result means your baby is more likely to have the condition, but it isn’t a diagnosis.
If your result shows a higher chance, your specialist can talk you through the next steps. You may be offered a diagnostic test, such as:
- Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), which tests a small sample from the placenta
- Amniocentesis, which tests a sample of the fluid around your baby
These tests can give you a more certain answer.

Frequently asked questions about the Panorama test
How accurate is the Panorama test?
Panorama is highly accurate at screening for some chromosome conditions, although its accuracy varies depending on the condition.
Like all NIPTs, Panorama is a screening test. A higher-risk result may need to be confirmed with diagnostic testing.
Is the Panorama test safe?
Yes. Panorama only needs a blood sample from you. Nothing is taken from your baby or the pregnancy, so the test doesn’t put your pregnancy at risk.
Can Panorama tell you your baby’s sex?
Yes. Your baby’s sex can be reported as part of Panorama if you choose to know. In twin pregnancies, Panorama can report the sex of each baby.
Do you need a referral?
No. You can book the Panorama test directly with Grosvenor Gardens Healthcare. If you’re not sure when to book or which pregnancy screening test is right for you, contact our team before you book.
What happens if your result is high risk?
A higher-risk result doesn’t mean that your baby definitely has the condition. Your specialist will explain what the result means and talk through your options. This may include CVS or amniocentesis if you’d like a more certain answer.
