Breast cancer

Breast cancer is a common form of cancer that develops in the cells of the breast. The estimated lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer is 1 in 7 (15%) for females born after 1960 in the UK. Symptoms of breast cancer include a lump or thickening in the breast. You usually start by seeing a healthcare professional or you may have had changes picked up through breast screening. Early detection is key to successful treatment, and advancements in medical technologies have significantly improved survival rates. Regular breast screening and awareness of potential symptoms play a crucial role in the effective management of breast cancer.

    Risk factors:
    • Getting older: Most breast cancers are diagnosed after the age of 50.
    • Inherited genes: Women who are found to carry certain genetic mutations, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 are at higher risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
    • Dense Breasts: Having relatively higher percentage of breast glands/fibrous tissue than soft fat.
    • Reproductive history: Starting periods early before age 12 or starting menopause late after age 55.
    • Personal background of breast cancer or certain high risk/precancerous disease: Women who have had breast cancer in the past are more likely to get breast cancer a second time. Some non-cancerous breast diseases such as atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) or lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) are associated with a higher risk of getting breast cancer.
    • Family history of breast or ovarian cancer: A woman’s risk for breast cancer is higher if she has a mother, sister, or daughter (first-degree relative) or multiple family members on either her mother’s or father’s side of the family who have had breast or ovarian cancer. Having a first-degree male relative with breast cancer also raises a woman’s risk.
    • Previous treatments using radiation therapy: Women who had radiation therapy to the chest or breasts (for instance, treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma) before age 30 have a higher risk of getting breast cancer later in life.
    • Sedentary lifestyle: Women who are not physically active are at higher risk of getting breast cancer.
    • Overweight and obesity.
    • Alcohol consumption: Higher alcohol intake has been found to increase the risk for breast cancer.
    • Hormones: Certain forms of hormone replacement therapy prescribed during menopause and certain oral contraceptive pills have been associated with increased breast cancer risk.
